TRAVEL INFORMATION

St-Petersburg's airport is situated at Pulkovo, 20 km south of the City. There are daily direct flights to Pulkovo from Frankfurt, Paris and London by EU carriers (Lufhansa, Air France, BA).

GermanWing (a German carrier which is exceptionally cheap - see www.germanwings.com) has recently opened new connection between Duesseldorf and St-Petersburg.

Pulkovo Aviation Company has its own airlines between St-Petersburg and Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Duesseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover, London, Milan, Munich, Paris, Prague, Stockholm. Not all these services are daily ones. In many cases the fare with Pulkovo Aviation will be found to be lower than that of the competing European airline.

Another possibility is satellite flights of US-carriers and Air France via Paris. Finnair via Helsinki (30 min from St. Petersburg) or Lufthanza via Frankfurt may also be recommended.

For the more adventurous, a cheaper (or more interesting) way to reach St-Petersburg may be to use a discount airline to fly as far east as possible in the EU, e.g. Helsinki or Tallinn, and then to complete your journey by train or by bus. From Helsinki there are two fast trains a day, the Finnish-operated 'Sibelius' and the Russian-operated 'Repin'. The Sibelius leaves in the early morning and the Repin in mid-afternoon. Journey times are approximately six hours.

There are also fast bus services from Helsinki to St Petersburg, with similar journey times. From Tallinn twice-daily buses are advertised by www.eurolines.ee. The journey time is approximately seven hours and the price is as little as 17 euros.

At the time of writing (December 2005), Easyjet are offering one-way flights from London Stansted to Tallinn on Saturday 19th August at 46 pounds (including taxes).

The public trainsport (buses, trolleys, underground trains) costs 12 roubles for the ride. The private line minibuses are 15-20 roubles, depending on their routes.
